VIN: GL1-4011020
YR: 78
I purchased my 78 (VIN #GL 14011020) from the original owner in May 1994 with 5,200 miles, it had not been run in years and was left with fuel in the carbs. This was the first standard (not dressed) wing I had ever seen and I just had to have it. After cleaning the fuel system and a complete rebuild of the carbs, she was ready to run. The original tires were replaced with new Metzlers and the rest of the bike was gone through completely. All the chrome and paint (black with gold pinstripes) was original and near perfect. I bought a fork mounted windshield but was not happy so I found another '78 with a fairing and bags and with a little cleaning and paint they went on along with the engine guards and a trunk. The bags and trunk come off from time to time but once you get use to having the room it is hard to go 1/2 naked. For an update 1/08 my GL has gone from a naked Wing to a dressed tourer and back to naked over the years, now it has a sidecar mounted up. I do change from Vetter fairing (in winter) to a cafe style Fairing, to nothing or a clear windshield from time to time. Over the years this has been a great bike that still turns heads and is just fun to ride! My wife and I have been on day rides that go 500 miles, or just around the corner for a coffee on it. I have had many street bikes since 1975 but this was my first GL and although I have many project bikes I am rebuilding or playing with, I am sure that I will never get rid of this one in particular.
