Derwood Ferguson Here are two photos of my 1975 GL 1000 taken on it’s 25th birthday. The Windjammer III fairing and Hang 2 seat that it carried for most of the time had just been removed and the original seat reinstalled. The homemade gauge hoods were left on along with the Granturismo grips and Progressive shocks & springs. Nothing else has been changed and every scratch, dent, or other mark on it is like a diary with a memory of how it got there. I have always kept records and have recently organized my years of notes, repair bills, etc. They may be interesting to some, but for me they too were like reading a diary of the past 25 years. Linda rode with me for more than half the miles accumulated. When asked why I still ride a 75 Gold Wing, I tell how Linda said in 1975, "If you’re going to pay $3,000 for a motorcycle it had better last awhile". ( I had been trading bikes every year or two before that. ) My GL has been "down" once (with me on it) - a slide into a shallow ditch on a rainy night. It has fallen over several times from the stands, though.
I had joined the CWC in early 1993, but when Nancy Smay had her accident, I thought the club would end like others I had joined (does anyone remember the International Foul Owners Association?) and didn’t renew my membership. I don’t know what my membership number was then and don’t have my original membership card, only the newsletters from Mar 93 thru Sep 95.
The GL is still running great and I ride it every chance I can, although without a fairing the temperature needs to be a little higher (60 instead of 40). It spent most of it’s time in Waterloo, Iowa until my retirement to Alabama in 1999. Linda doesn’t ride much anymore, but I still enjoy riding NE Alabama, N Georgia, and E Tennessee. These are the roads I always dreamed of when riding on those straight, flat roads of Iowa.
